This session focuses on the human rights system in Europe, the most advanced human rights system in the world.
The session will commence with a lecture on how this system has developed since the Second World War.
Key events are the founding of the Council of Europe in 1949, the adoption of the European Convention of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms the following year and the establishment of the European Court of Human Rights in 1959. After the lecture, the students will view a film about the European Court of Human Rights and participate in group work to analyse court cases.
Finally, the students will reflect on why this knowledge is relevant for them in their future work as journalists.
